Inspiration

Sooner or later, some families will be confronted with cancer, families that from then on will live between hope and fear.  Below you will find the story contributed by Lowie van Gorp, father of Guusje, a brave child who unfortunately lost her fight against the scourge …

31 March 2011.  An interview with the doctors.  They had spotted a tumor the size of a grown man’s fist in Guusje’s left lung.  There were also small spots in her right lung.  Our world turned upside down.  We were living between hope and fear.  So afraid to lose Guusje.  A host of therapy sessions followed.  Multiple surgeries, chemotherapy courses and radiation treatment.  Hard times for Guusje.  She had character.  She was brave.  She wanted to live.  But she died nevertheless, 7 months later.  The sickness was too big for Amazing Guusje.

31 March 2011.  Friends get a phone call.  The diagnosis is children’s cancer.  For their son also gruelling therapies follow.  In the end, he was given a clean bill of health.  One day after Guusje died.  Still, ‘clean’ is a relative term.  Multiple surgeries are to follow in the course of this year.  Consequences of the illness.

Two children.  Both with cancer.  One dies, the other lives.  Both fighting the hard fight, even after being ‘cured’.  A sickness for life.  This is why research is necessary.  To make sure that more children live.  And have a good quality of life.

All children with cancer deliver a top performance.  They strive for life. Please help them to succeed. Support the cyclists of Across-Europe.  Make them fly on their way from the North Cape to Athens.  They’re going for first prize:  an enormous amount of money for KiKa!

Across Europe

In the summer of 2011 a group of 6 students were imagining an adventurous journey that would take them across the whole of Europe.  They were thinking about a trip from the North Cape all the way down to Athens.  They decided to turn their ambitions into reality.

August 2012

This is a cycle trip of more than 5.500km (3,400mi) to be completed within a month.  The goal of this trip is to collect as much money as possible for the KiKa Charity Foundation.  Across Europe will depart from the shores of the Barents Sea, transverse Scandinavia, cross the Baltic and then proceed all the way down through the old Eastern Bloc. In order to make sure everyone has the right equipment and the proper nourishment to complete the tour the team will be supported by 4 helpers in 2 cars.  The finishing line of this adventure will be in Athens.

Events

Other events, besides the training, will be laid on to draw attention to both Across Europe and KiKa.  Golf for KiKa and the Students Corps Tour are all aimed at helping to bring in as much money as possible for the KiKa Charity Foundation.
