Training

It’s not just the trip that is going to be long, so is the path towards it!  Preparations are in full swing.  Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday tyres are inflated to full tension and the Across Europe team passes through the polder landscape of the Western Netherlands.  The grimpeurs (climbers) were given an opportunity during the first training weekend in September 2011 to show  their talents in the hills of Limburg and the team learned some lessons about crashes, equipment failures and a team member getting lost.

The Spring will be characterised by increasingly longer distances.  In addition to the regular training the team will take part in several Spring Classics.  In June we will cycle to Paris (450km!) in one day to get the cyclists used to long distances.

Across Europe will definitely take part in the Amstel Gold Race, our own students’ cycle tour, four VacanSoleil Tours and the Tour of Flanders.

Medical

Rotterdam - Rome

 2100 kilometers in 12 days
Le Tour de France  3471 kilometers in 21 days
North Cape - Athens     5500 kilometers in 30 days

The figures above give some indication of the magnitude of the challenge the Across Europe boys are facing.  All possible effort is being made to make this feat possible.  Robust equipment, comfortable air mattresses and a cheerful support team!

Physio-medical support is another necessity.  The Department of Sports Medicine of the Isala Clinics in Weezenlanden has surveyed the physical condition of the cyclists.  Under the inspiring leadership of Eelco Weijmans we are working our way through the training schedule that he created.  The cyclists will receive several more check-ups in the run-up to the tour in order to avoid injuries.
